A brief preview of some Nintendo 3DS games

On March 20, 2011 by Aaron Meehan

Earlier today I was lucky enough to go to one of the Nintendo 3DS tour events which was in Dublin, Ireland and there I managed to get a short look at a few demos of upcoming titles for the handheld.

Ridge Racer 3D

Ridge racer 3D is a continuation of the popular racer series. The game uses drifting to a gameplay advantage because when you drift around a corner successfully you gain nitros which you can use. The demo allowed you 2 use a single turbo boost or a double turbo boost with each boost using one bar of turbo. The 3D effect wise for this game is not favorable, I tried the game with the 3D slider turned up to the full 3D and it made it very difficult to play, cornering was difficult because you could not judge when to turn into the corner due to a blur effect, but turning the 3D slider down to the half way point reduced this blur problem and made it easier to turn into corners etc. The controls and gameplay were solid and was easy to pick up and play with circle pad making turning to the car easier and correcting the car in drifting too. Also Ridge Racer 3D uses the StreetPass so people can share their fastest times with others.

To summarize Ridge Racer 3D is a solid game from the demo that was playable at the Nintendo 3DS event.

Kid Icarus Uprising

Kid Icarus Uprising is the return of the Kid Icarus franchise which sees a child angel take on the forces of evil. The demo I played showed of aerial and ground combat. The controls are are a bit crazy when you have the circle pad to move the L trigger to attack and the touchscreen to target and move the camera, the touchscreen to used to target is a bit of pain because it makes holding the 3DS difficult, but you can get away without using the touchscreen because it is a rail shooter and you can just move Icarus from side to side up or down with the circle pad to shoot them no problem. On the ground it is a different story because the touchscreen turns the camera and you have to quickly slide the stylish pen across the touchscreen to move and this is difficult to do quickly. But moving onto the 3D it works well with the game unlike in the case of Ridge Racer 3D which I mentioned above. The gameplay apart from the control issues is fun especially when you fight like a dog and Icarus shouts “Bark like a dog”. I would say after you play for a but you could easily learn to master the controls but I only had a few minutes to get used to them, so you wont be able to jump straight into the controls like in Ridge Racer 3D.

To summarize Kid Icarus Uprising is a fun little game and while the controls are a bit difficult for a first time user, but can easily be learned to use over time.
