World of Warcraft subscription numbers drops to 8.3 million

On May 9, 2013 by Ash Meehan

According to Activision-Blizzard, their mmo colossus, World of Warcraft, has lost 1.3 million subscribers in the last three months. World of Warcraft now has 8.3 million subscribers.

While the loss of over a million subscribers for any pay to play mmo would be a disaster, a drop of this magnitude for World of Warcraft really doesn’t mean a lot. I’m sure Activision-Blizzard isn’t happy about the loss in numbers, but World of Warcraft still has 8.3 million players paying €12.99 per month.

Bobby Kotick, Chief Executive Officer, Activision-Blizzard, had the following to say about World of Warcraft’s subscription numbers.

“During the quarter, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft remained the #1 subscription based MMORPG in the world with more than eight million subscribers, although the game saw declines of approximately 1.3 million subscribers, mainly from the East, but in the West as well.”

It will be interesting to if and how Blizzard reacts to the fall in subscribers. With that said Blizzard might just quietly turn away from World of Warcraft and focus on their new unannounced mmo.
