Square Enix has announced a remake of their 1993 classic, Secret of Mana for PS4, PS Vita and Windows PC, via Steam on February 15, 2018.

Originally released in 1993 (1994 in Europe) Secret of Mana is regarded as one of the greatest RPG of all time with the likes of Edge magazine describing it as “one of the high points of the 16bit era” in 2014. For those who don’t remember or never played Secret of Mana, the game was given the following description by Square Enix.

Secret of Mana invites players on an action-packed adventure taking on the role Randi, along with his two companions, Primm and Popoi, as they battle a perilous empire to reclaim the magical power of Mana and bring the world back to order.

The announced Secret of Mana remake will see revamped 3D visuals, upgraded gameplay, audio updates and new dialogue scenes. Square Enix said the following regarding the new features and upgrades.

  • Audio Updates – including a newly arranged musical score and voiced characters.
  • 3D Graphics – revamped visuals for the entire game; a vivid, Mana-filled world rebuilt in 3D for the first time.
  • Upgraded Gameplay – the original system has been reworked in an effort to realise a modern action-RPG with improved gameplay.
  • Dialog scenes added – several core scenes from the original story now newly visualized in-game.

In conjunction with the announcement, Square Enix released an announcement trailer showing of the new upgraded 3D graphics.
