Today, Amazon has announced that they have purchased the streaming website Twitch “for approximately $970 million in cash”. Amazon’s purchase also puts to bed the rumours that Google were in the process of acquiring the company.

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Twitch Interactive, Inc., the leading live video platform for gamers. In July, more than 55 million unique visitors viewed more than 15 billion minutes of content on Twitch produced by more than 1 million broadcasters, including individual gamers, pro players, publishers, developers, media outlets, conventions and stadium-filling esports organizations.

Twitch launched in June 2011 to focus exclusively on live video for gamers. Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved by Twitch’s shareholders, Amazon will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Twitch for approximately $970 million in cash, as adjusted for the assumption of options and other items. Subject to customary closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close in the second half of 2014.

Twitch CEO, Emmett Shear also posted a letter on the Twitch website thanking the Twitch community, “I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you’ve created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Amazon’s purchase of Twitch was rather unexpected as back in May, Variety reported that search giant Google were planning to buy Twitch for around $1 billion.

I hope that Amazon’s purchase of Twitch will be great news for those who stream games and those who love watching people play games.
