With Nintendo releasing their new handheld the 3DS where do some of their competitors lie? Well Sony have their much rumored about Playstation portable 2. The PSP2 is the successor of the PSP and PSP Go, with the PSP doing alright and the PSP Go being a bit of a flop.

But MCV has reported 2 interesting pieces of news about the PSP2.  They report that Sony have said that it is more powerful than the Playstation 3 Sony’s primary console. It is not known what they mean by this because to pack the power of a PS3 into a handheld would be a bit crazy so I am guessing graphically powerful myself.

Also high level sources at Sony told MCV they are aiming for a Q4 2011 release date and they have begun outlining their 2011 handheld strategy.

Some features the PSP2 is supposed to have are a HD screen, 2 stick controllers (something that was needed on the original PSP), it will retain its ‘brick’ form and a physical media (hopefully not the UMD discs).

Sony are hoping to reveal more at E3 and at the GDC.

So only time will tell on what the PSP2 will be capable off.
