[UPDATE]Malfunction hit Steam, users given access to other people’s accounts
Update: It appears that Valve has taken Steam offline. Also, like other sites I recommend don’t altering any parts of your account, and keep an eye on your credit cards for any unknown withdrawals regarding Steam.
Update 2: Steam is back online. There is no official word from Valve regarding what caused today’s issues.
Update 3: Official statement from Valve. The problem according to Valve was the result of a configuration change made earlier in the day.
Steam is back up and running without any known issues. As a result of a configuration change earlier today, a caching issue allowed some users to randomly see pages generated for other users for a period of less than an hour. This issue has since been resolved. We believe no unauthorized actions were allowed on accounts beyond the viewing of cached page information and no additional action is required by users.
It is not something you want to see on Christmas Day, but Steam is experiencing an apparent data breach with users having access to other users account.
Steam users from around the world are reporting this very issue as users log in to celebrate Christmas by playing with friends or buying a game on sale. To make this issue worse accessing your “account info” section on Steam is allowing you to see email and partial credit card numbers of other Steam users, this issue is backed up by the video game news outlet, Kotaku. Apart from the ability to see other users account information, you can also view their wish list and purchase history. Upon closer inspection, the accounts you can view seems to alter upon refresh.
At this time, Valve had not made any statement regarding this issue, but one can only hope that they fix the issue as soon as possible as the issue could run deeper than what we are seeing on the Steam client.
