The novels were based around a collection of characters that became trapped in a Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, to leave the game the characters had complete the game by defeating the game’s final boss, but if you died in the game you would also die in real life.
Sword Art Online’s popularity saw the novels adapted into an anime television series produced by A-1 pictures. The show has received a large fan following, with fans of the show eagerly hopping for a third season. For those living outside of Japan, the popular anime streaming website, Crunchyroll has the rights to stream both the first and second season of Sword Art Online.
