Ghost Recon Future Soldier review

On June 4, 2012 by Ash Meehan

Future Soldier’s online multiplayer like many shooters is one of its strongest selling points. The multiplayer supports up to 12 players and has three classes, four game types and 10 maps.

The four modes are called conflict, decoy, siege and saboteur. What first struck me about the list of modes is that they are all objective based, so there is no team deathmatch styled mode in this game. Each mode is fun, but I personally found myself enjoying conflict because in a way it felt the closest to a deathmatch game.

The three classes are called rifleman, scout and engineer. Each class as their own unique ability and weapons for example the Scout has an optical camo ability which renders it invisible and it uses Sniper rifles.

When you level a class up you gain tokens which can be used to buy new weapons, equipment and modifications, but some might require you to be a certain level also.

Multiplayer offers a fun feature for customizing your weapons called ‘Gunsmith’ which lets you customize nearly every part of your chosen weapon. In this mode you can change buy new modifications with tokens you have gained from levelling up. The modifications are pretty fun because of the large array of changes you can do to a weapon and as such the same weapon can behave differently depending on what the person likes in their weapon for example more control and with a lower rate of fire or a power and high rate of fire weapon with less control.

My final thought on the multiplayer is that it is stressful at first, but it is enjoyable once you get into the swing of it. If you like run and gun multiplayer like in Call of Duty than you might not like this as Future Soldier is cover based and as such the gameplay is a bit slower than an FPS multiplayer game. What I enjoyed the most in the multiplayer was the Gunsmith feature. As a person who likes role playing games I spent a large portion of my time deciding on what would be the best way to customize the weapon.

Future Soldier’s user interface is rather interesting as it tries to just show the bare bones of what is needed. There are times when it goes pretty crazy with giant text in the sky, but the game gives a rational explanation for it. The in-game UI is seen by the characters because of the heads up display they are wearing and as such they are seeing the large writing too.

Graphically Future Soldier is pretty standard for a console shooter. The game goes for a realistic graphical feel so expect a lot of dark colours like brown etc. The game also has some noticeable pop in for example while I was running down a street objects would just appear out of nowhere in front of me.

The games sound is pretty well done from the com chatter and to the weapons, but I’m not exactly an expert on weapon sounds.

The games controls are alright, but I did sometimes mess up the controls when in the heat of battle. The layout is alright, but I didn’t like the idea of having the reload and melee attack been on the same button.

Conclusion

My final thoughts is that Future Soldier is an enjoyable game with a campaign that lasts about 12 hours and isn’t afraid to challenge you. The games multiplayer while enjoyable is your standard fair, but gunsmith adds a nice dimension to the game.

SCORE: 70%

Pros:

  • The character interaction in the campaign draws you into the game.
  • Gunsmith is an enjoyable feature which offers a lot of customisation.
  • Guerrilla mode is a intense and enjoyable
  • Multiplayer focuses on objective gameplay
  • Near future technology

Cons:

  • Only certain missions allow you to continue after getting spotted.
  • Some aspects of the campaign are left unresolved.
  • Graphical pop ins do occur
  • The text on the UI is pretty small so if you have a small TV you might have issues seeing it.
