Steam accounts hacked

On November 11, 2011 by Ash Meehan

Today it was revealed by Gamasutra that Valve’s Steam service has been hacked and credit card information and other user information have been stolen.

Gabe Newell, Valve managing director told Gamasutra in an email that usernames, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information were stolen.

Newell went onto say that they are unaware of any compromised Steam accounts. While those steam forum accounts that were comprised have had mandatory password change for all users. At present it doesn’t appear main Steam accounts have been breached.

Newell also told Gamasutra “I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.”

Personally I would recommend being on the safe side of things and change your Steam passwords just to be safe. This attack on a video game distributer is not the first of its kind as many people will remember the PlayStation Network attack which crippled Sony for several weeks earlier this year.
