A look back at the G4X Gaming Event

On September 9, 2011 by Ash Meehan

Well the Gaming Event in Waterford City last Friday has come and gone and now it is time to take a look back and to see how well or bad it was.

The event took place in the basement area of the “Revolutions Basement Bar” and was restricted to over 18s only. The tournament games that were available were Black Ops, Halo: Reach, FIFA 11, Mortal Kombat, Super Street Fighter IV and Teken 6. The majority of the gamers were on the Xbox 360, but 1 game was on the PS3 and that was Mortal Kombat. There was also Rock Band and Kinect Adventure for non tournament players.

Black Ops and Halo Reach were 2V2 games and the rest were 1V1 games. I took part in 2 Halo: Reach tournaments and 1 Black Ops tournament and I didn’t get very far in them.

The doors on the night opened at 6:30 PM and it was estimated that there were over 200 people in attendance. People flocked around the games and signed up quickly and the fun began.

G4X staff was pushed on the night especially since it was their first night, but they did well to get everything done to an above average level. There were some issues, but that would be expected since it was their first event. At times G4X staff had issues with reading names and some staff had to run around a lot. What interested me was the fact that they had a man on the PA system which was a great idea and made cutting through the noise of the crowd easy.

As the night went on the event began to settle into a good stride and I found the atmosphere get relaxed and the more fun began to spring up. The crowd really got into the 2 FIFA tournaments which took the projector screen and cheers could be heard as each goals went in and as people won matches.

In total there was a 16 tournaments spread across all the games and all 16 winners were entered into a grand final tournament to see who was the very best and would get the top prize of a PlayStation 3.

The grand final lasted 4 rounds and was spread across 3 games. The first game was Mortal Kombat, then Marvel V Capcom 3 was used for round 2 and 3 and finally the final round went down to player choice which turned out to be Halo: Reach.

My overall impression is that the event was great for a first time event by G4X. The company set it up well and within a small budget they used a lot of their own equipment which included games, TVs and consoles.

The full list of prizes on the night excluding the grand prize of a PS3 included GameStop vouchers which were provided by GameStop, console accessories, Xbox Magazine subscription, Rugby World Cup 2011 the video game (Xbox 360) and more.

Personally I would attend this event again and G4X have said they are looking at doing more of these events. The reception from attendees was great. On a final note I would love to see the event start earlier as the event didn’t finish until 2:30 am.

Thank you too G4X staff who were there and did some excellent work on the night.

  • Nice photo’s and report mate. The event looks small, but hopefully G4X will grow into bigger things. You can’t moan that the event finished at 02:30. Either Drink coke and Red bull or start drinking ;)

  • lol, I was drinking coke and red bull on the night and I wouldn’t drink alcohol while working.
