Square Enix to take action over Deus Ex leak

On July 7, 2011 by Ash Meehan

Remember when the 10 minute preview copy of Deus Ex Human Revolution leaked? well if not Square Enix sure remembers and they are taking on individuals who gained access to the preview copy and distributed the copy to third parties.

The preview copy of the game was placed behind a secret protected internet site so only select groups could gain access to the preview, but an Italian video game review magazine known as GMC who had access to the preview had their access information taken by the defendants without permission or knowledge by GMC. After this the defendants proceeded to pass a copy of the game onto third parties.

Square Enix have now bought claims to the individuals under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Square Enix cite damages in excess of $5000, and are seeking a permanent injunction of copying and republishing against defendants, as well as actual and statutory damages, and attorney’s fees and costs.

  • Hmmm $5000, I would have thought they would have nailed the guys that did it and the magazine for a lot more. So much so that they would have the magazine shutdown and the people that did the hacking would loose there homes. If I was in that position I would. Yes if someone stole my software I would go to town on them big time.
