PC version of Ys VIII faces a lengthy delay
NIS America has announced that the PC version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA to an indeterminate date due to numerous issues with the game.
According to NIS America’s VP and COO, Mitsuharu Hiraoka, the PC delay is due to, “Low framerate issues and memory leak problems were apparent from the earliest PC builds we received.” Attempts have been made to fix the issues with NIS America reporting that they have improved the performance, but framerate drops still occur, “To help combat these, we looked into the drawing processes, which lead to an overall improvement in performance. However, we are still encountering framerate drops in specific circumstances.”
Explaining why the PS4 and PS Vita versions did not suffer the same issues as the PC, NIS America stated, “The systems regulating these framerate issues are heavily reliant on the architecture of the original PlayStation 4 version and, as such, are not existent in PC architecture.”
It also seems that NIS America was trying to get the PC versions of Ys VIII with limited effort, in a sense making a quick PC port. However, as NIS America put it “the PC version of the game was originally envisioned as a port, we avoided touching the core programming as much as possible and focused on PC performance optimization.”
In an effort to rectify the problems, NIS America has transferred development to an entirely different studio, “Once the changes from the relocalization efforts have been implemented at the end of this month, we will be moving development to an entirely different developer who will primarily focus on frame rate improvements as well as other PC optimizations.”
For those who cannot wait any longer, NIS America has stated those who pre-purchased the game on Steam can go to https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6695-QIKM-7966&l to claim a full refund.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA is currently available for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.
