AreaNet’s MMO Guild Wars 2 is now completely free to play; the move to free to play comes three years after the game’s initial release, and ahead of the game’s expansion, Heart of Thorns, on October 23rd.

Free to play users will be subject to several restrictions. Free to player accounts will have fewer character slots and bag slots, chat and economy restrictions, they will only have access to local chat and whispers. Other restrictions include the inability to mail gold or items directly to other players, trade gold for gems, or access guild vaults.

There will also be content restrictions, free to play users must play to level 10 before leaving the starting zones, to level 30 before using LFG, and to level 60 before using World vs. World. Free to play users can play PvP immediately but must get to Rank 20 before using custom and unranked arenas.

Guild Wars 2 becoming free to play isn’t the only big news, as ArenaNet announced that the game’s expansion, Guild Wars 2: Heart of the Thorns will be released in North America and Europe on October 23rd. The expansion will feature a raft of new content including raids.
