Destiny makes over $500 million on its first day

On September 14, 2014 by Aaron Meehan

It seems like Bungie’s brand new IP Destiny has being a financial success as the game’s publisher Activision has revealed that they sold $500 million worth of copies of Destiny.

“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard in a press statement. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”

According to Activision, Destiny is both the most successful new video game franchise launch of all time and the highest-selling day one digital console release in history.

The reason for the huge sales is likely down to the fact the game was sold worldwide on the same day, Bungie’s reputation following the Halo franchise, and the amount of money Activision spent on marketing the game, which included a massive billboard on Times Square and a Live-action trailer.
