Xtra-vision release statement regarding pre-order controversy

On November 26, 2013 by Ash Meehan

Today, Xtra-vision Ireland has released a statement regarding the Xbox One pre-order controversy. The controversy related to the company only allowing people who purchased an additional Xbox One game to collect their pre-ordered console.

The controversy was first brought to light via the popular Irish forum boards.ie. The controversy grew after an anonymous source from Xtra-Vision Ireland told The Gaming Liberty that they were told “not to sell” pre-ordered hardware “unless [customers] take a game with it.” Then finally yesterday the National Consumer Agency released a statement saying they would be “following up” on the Xtra-Vision pre-order controversy.

The statement from Xtra-Vision said:

In response to the situation regarding pre-orders of XBoxOne consoles in Xtra-vision stores, Xtra-vision can confirm that from today (Tuesday 26th November) onwards, any person who collects their pre-ordered XBoxOne console at any Xtra-vision store will not have to purchase an additional game in order to receive their console.

Customers who have already collected their XBoxOne console and purchased an additional game can return the unopened game to the Xtra-vision branch where the purchase was made between November 22nd and November 26th, and the cost of the game will be refunded on presentation of proof of purchase.

Xtra-vision regret any upset or inconvenience that may have been caused to customers.

We can confirm that customers who have pre-ordered PlayStation 4 consoles will not have to purchase an additional game in order to receive their console.

Xtra-Vision has had a poor year with the DVD and game rental store entering receivership on April 30th. This led to the closure of 20 stores and the loss of 120 jobs. Fortunately Xtra-Vision was sold to Hilco Capital Ireland  in June. Then on August 30th, Hilco announced that 26 Xtra-Vision stores would be dual-branded with the record store HMV.
