On June 11, 2013 by Ash Meehan

E3 press conferences are usually considered boring affairs by many, but I think you will be hard pressed to find anyone left bored by PlayStation E3 press conference. PS unveiled the PS4, tons of game, a price and took a few swipes at Xbox One.

First and foremost, Sony unveiled the look of the PlayStation 4. The console looks like smaller sleeker version of the Xbox One with a blue LED strip around it. After the conference it was also announced that the PS4 would have a 500GB HDD, just like the Xbox One. Sony also announced that the console will retail for $399/€399/£349. This means the PS4 is $100 cheaper than Microsoft’s Xbox One.

Sony Computer Entertainment World Wide Studios announced that they are currently developing more than 30 PS4 exclusive, 20 of them, including 12 new IPs, are planned to release within a year of the launch of the PlayStation 4. Some of the 30 exclusive are: DriveClub, Killzone Shadow Fall, KNACK, inFAMOUS Second Son and the newly unveiled, The Order: 1886 from studio Ready at Dawn. DriveClub, Killzone and KNACK will all be available at launch.

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) showed that they back the independent scene with a whole host of independent games, according to SCE indie developers will be able to self publish on the PS4. Some of the indie games coming to the PS4 include: Transistor by Super Giant, Don’t Starve by Klei Entertainment, Mercenary Kings by Tribute Games, Octodad: Deadliest Catch by Young Horses, Secret Ponchos by SwitchBlade Monkeys, Outlast by Red Barrels, Oddworld: New N Tasty by Oddworld Inhabitants and Galak-Z by 17-bit.

If indie games aren’t your thing, SCE announced a few PS4 games from some of their key publishing partners:

Some of the game’s announced were titles we already knew about such as Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Watch_Dogs from Ubisoft, NBA 2K14 from 2K Sports, and Destiny from Bungie and Activision.

Sony also revealed some new PS4 titles. This included Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XV (Final Fantasy XV was originally Final Fantasy Versus XIII) from Square Enix, The Elder Scrolls Online from Bethesda Game Studios’ and finally a worldwide exclusive unveiling of Mad Max from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

PlayStation Plus was also discussed at the conference with SCE announcing that PS4 owners will receive the same PS Plus benefits as the PS3 and PS Vita users for no extra cost.

With that said SCE dropped a bomb shell with regards to the PS Plus on PS4. SCE revealed that PS4 users will need PS Plus if they want to play online multiplayer components of games. This feature was quickly glossed over by SCE and not discussed at any length during the conference. With that said PS Plus members will be getting free PS4 games at launch. PlayStation Plus members will receive DriveClub on launch day via the Instant Game Collection. In addition SCE will be releasing one free digital tile each month for PS members on the PlayStation 4.

PS Plus membership is available as a one-year membership for $49.99, a three- month membership for $17.99, and a one-month membership for $9.99 (one month membership is currently not available yet).

Moving away from the PlayStation 4, SCE also talked about the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3.

SCE announced that more than 85 additional titles are scheduled for release on the PS Vita by the end of 2013, which means that the Vita will have more than 125 PS Vita game and more than 400 classic titles from the PSP and PS One classics catalogues.

The PS Vita titles featured during the press conference include: Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, CounterSpy, Destiny of Spirits, Doki Doki Universe, Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway. SCE announced that SCE WWS will be releasing God of War HD 1 and 2, Flower and Dead Nation on the handheld. Finally they announced Square Enix’s Final Fantasy X and X-2, and Telltale Game’s The Walking Dead.

PlayStation 3 owners got a taste of what to expect games wise on the system for its seventh year. SCE mentioned: Puppeteer, Rain, Gran Turismo 6, BEYOND: Two Souls, The Last of Us, Batman: Arkham Origins and Grand Theft Auto V.

Finally it wouldn’t be right to leave without mentioning the swipes Sony took at Microsoft. SCE announced that there would be no used game restrictions, no online checks and no DRM. All these features are on the Xbox One, and they are features that gaming fans hated, so as you might have expected the conference hall erupted with a huge round of applause.

Now before I finish this article, here is a video of how the PS4 will handle used games.
