On June 7, 2013 by Ash Meehan

Microsoft has answered the question about their trade-in policy for the Xbox One. Their answer let the game’s publishers decide.

Microsoft’s trade-in and resell policy for the Xbox One had being a widely discussed topic, with one theory being that an extra fee would be attached to game you wanted to trade-in at a store. Well finally here is Microsoft’s official answer via Xbox Wire.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

From the above statement, Microsoft have stated that ability to trade-in a game rests with the publisher, and that publishers will not be forced to pay any extra charge if they decide to allow their game to be traded in.

At the bottom of the same Xbox Wire article, Microsoft stated that gamers will be able to trade-in games published by Microsoft Studios.

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers.
