Call of Duty: Ghosts “All Access” event creates a feeling of déjà vu
Activision and Infinity Ward have held a pre-E3 Call of Duty: Ghosts All Access event today, the event gave us a look at the gameplay and the Call of Duty dog, now named Riley.
Infinity Ward showed off two campaign levels. One under water level and one level showcasing the Call of Duty dog. Both levels managed to hold my attention, but after watching the last level, I got a feeling of déjà vu. I realized I’ve seen levels like this before in previous Call of Duty games.
The second level with the two soldiers and the dog reminded me of the Chernobyl level from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but with the addition of controllable dog. From what was shown, the playable character doesn’t do that much, you control the dog and kill stranglers while your ally uses his sniper rifle to kill enemies when needed. Also the setting felt like the COD 4 level too with a ruined San Diego replacing Chernobyl.
The first level was an underwater level where once again we had two soldiers. These soldiers were on a mission to stop/blow up an enemy vessel. There is a comparison with a previous Call of Duty title, but it is a bit grasping at straws. The sequence reminded me of the water level from Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, in particular the mission where you have to disable the submarine, board it and stop the people inside from firing the subs weapons at New York City.
From the 30 minute event, I didn’t see anything that really made me want to play the game. The only interesting thing before the event was the dog and at the event they revealed it to be a drone with teeth. The 30 minutes was full of running, gunning and a tiny bit of story.
Speaking of story, the event never really told me anything about the game. We now know that two of the characters are brothers, the game is set 10 years in the future and you play as the underdog, outmatched and outgunned. I wanted to learn who the enemy was, I wanted to know if it was Russians again or maybe a completely different country. Maybe I wasn’t this events target audience, because as a gamer nothing about it made me want to the play the new Call of Duty game.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released on November 5, 2013 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
