Disney shuts down LucasArts

On April 3, 2013 by Ash Meehan

According to Game Informer, Disney has today all but shutdown the video game studio, LucasArts. The studio is facing a large number of layoffs and a move away from an internal development to a licensing model.

The official statement from Disney about LucasArts states the following:

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

Throughout its history, LucasArts has created and published such well known titles such as The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Star Wars: Rebel Assault to name but a few. Recently Lucas Arts hasn’t made/published that many well received games, with one well known example being Kinect Star Wars.

The layoffs and restructuring of the company also means that the games, Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault will not be completed internally. Earlier today, Kotaku reported that both games were cancelled, but Game Informer has said they have being told by a LucasArts rep that they still might be released.

The rep said the following to Game Informer:

“It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we’re just looking at different models rather than internal production… They’re evaluating everything. There’s always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing.”

Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the layoffs at LucasArts.
