Nintendo and the Pokémon Company has today announced Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the Nintendo 3DS. The new games will bring the handheld series into the 3D world in October 2013.

Unlike previous handheld Pokémon games which feel flat and exist in a 2D plain due to its top down view, Pokémon X and Y will be set in a 3D world.

In today’s announcement, Junichi Masuda, video game director at Game Freak Inc said: “We brought Pokémon into an entirely new dimension and we’re incredibly excited to bring Pokémon X and Pokémon Y to fans.” “The stunning visuals, a completely redesigned environment, game scenario, music, and communication features will bring smiles to the faces of video game players around the world.”

Pokémon X and Y is the first Pokémon RPG to appear on the Nintendo 3DS.

Not much has being revealed about the two new games, but Nintendo did release a set of screenshots an announcement trailer.

The Pokémon games series has been around since 1998 (1996 in Japan) with the release of Pokémon Red and Blue. Since then there has been over ten Pokémon games released to date.
