At this Microsoft’s E3 press conference yesterday one of the central themes was entertainment in the home and on the go. Now here is what they meant by that.

There entertainment on the go and in the home started with the reveal of ‘Xbox SmartGlass’ which is an application for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and other portable devices that connects phones, PCs and tablets with your Xbox 360. The SmartGlass aims to make entertainment more engaging, web surfing more effortless, and playing games more immersive.

During the press conference Don Matttrick, president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft said “Xbox is on a mission to make the entertainment that you love even more amazing.” “With Xbox SmartGlass, we are lighting up entertainment across your phone, tablet, PC and TV in a completely new way. If you love to play games, watch TV and movies, surf the Web, or listen to music, there has never been a better time to be on Xbox.”

Now Xbox SmartGlass wasn’t the only entertainment news for Microsoft’s console. There is a lot more.

Microsoft announced that Internet Explorer will be coming to Xbox Live this fall in all countries. IE will use the Xbox, Kinect and SmartGlass to make the experience of surfing the net easier with voice recognition and the ability to navigate using your mobile devices for an easier Web browsing experience on the television.

Microsoft also announced an array of Xbox Live applications. Some of the applications will really appeal to sports as NBA Game Time, NHL GameCenter Live and ESPN will all be broadcasting their respective sports on the Xbox 360. These applications will not be available in all countries or might be restricted in others.

If sport isn’t your thing there is more than 35 new applications planned for the Xbox 360 over the next 12 months which includes Comedy Central Stand Up, Quickflix, BreakMedia and Machinima to name but a few. Some applications will be country specific for example Comedy Central Stand Up will only be available in the United States.

Finally Microsoft talked about Xbox on Windows 8. Xbox on Windows 8 will allow you to play games with friends and earn achievements, listen to music, and enjoy your favorite TV shows and movies wherever you go. And with Xbox SmartGlass, you can start a movie or TV show on your Windows 8 device and finish it on the big-screen TV.

Now that you have read about it here are two videos from the press conference which features Xbox Entertainment and the upcoming additions to Xbox Live.
