Modern Warfare 3 sells 6.5 million copies on launch day
Modern Warfare 3 has set a new record for the biggest entertainment launch by selling 6.5 million copies and making more than $400 million in a day in U.S. and U.K.
MW3 has dethroned last year’s Call of Duty game Black Ops to take the spot which managed to make $360 million in a single day. This shows Call of Duty has not lost touch with fans as the top 3 biggest entertainment launches are all Call of Duty games with Modern Warfare 2 now in third place.
Bobby Kotick, CEO or Activision Blizzard said “Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings,” two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”
Personally I see it as no surprise that MW3 broke records at launch with the hype it seems to bring each year and granted MW3 has seen some positive changes to the online multiplayer, but in other ways it has still yet to fix at least one nagging issue and that is the point of peer to peer server setup which is slowly becoming obsolete on consoles and nearly doesn’t exist anymore on PC.
Also this morning Activision announced that it would be donating $3 million to the Call of duty Endowment, a non-profit, public benefit corporation that seeks to provide job placement and training for veterans.
