Blizzard layoff rumours and WoW subs drop

On November 8, 2011 by Aaron Meehan

Blizzard seems to be having an unlucky day with rumours of mass layoffs and their mmo World of Warcraft continuing to lose subscribers.

During today’s Activision Blizzard investor call it was revealed that World of Warcraft’s subscription numbers have dropped from 11.4 million in May to 10.3 million (ending September 30). That is a drop over 1 million players. Now normally a massive drop like this would worry many companies, but the figures don’t include the 1 year subscription deal which sees you get a free copy of Diablo 3.

Many people would call this the death knell for the game, but still 10.3 million still makes it the biggest pay to play mmorpg out there.

Personally I feel the drop off was caused by a poor expansion in the form of Cataclysm where they promised so much a delivered so little. Granted they re did the zones etc. but post expansion content felt lacking in many respects with some promised updates never seeing the light of day for example the Abyssal Maw raid which was promised post launch and never saw the light after Blizzard felt it wasn’t right for the expansion which was all about the elements (funny enough Abyssal Maw was to focus on the water elementals and only one element was really focused on post expansion release which was fire), this likely left more than a few players annoyed and with other poor updates likely contributed to people leaving (including myself).

On the side of the Blizzard layoff rumours which started yesterday with Massively saying that John Staats (senior level designer on Blizzard’s game codenamed Titan) may have being laid off from Blizzard.

After this rumours spread and it lead to Blizzard community manager Bashiok saying “Hey guys, out of respect for their privacy, we don’t discuss individual employees, but the speculation circulating about ‘massive layoffs at Blizzard’ is just a rumor.”

Bashiok didn’t out right say the rumours where false just that they don’t comment on individual employees.

It is unknown what is happening at Blizzard, but from what I can see interesting things are happening and interesting in this case doesn’t appear to be good.
