Zynga wanted to buy PopCap Games

On July 14, 2011 by Ash Meehan

Earlier this week we reported that EA bought PopCap Games and PopCap’s CEO said that some other companies were interested in purchasing the company well brace yourselves because here is one the companies that wanted to buy them.
Zynga another social game company wished to purchase PopCap for a cool $1 billion which is $250 million more then what EA paid to buy the company. Zynga proposed finances for the deal came via credit from Goldman Sachs which is a benefactor of Zynga.

Now the question is now why did PopCap turn down an offer from Zynga is it was over $200 million more than what EA paid? Personally I believe PopCap looked long and hard at how both companies are doing. EA has published some hugely successful titles and series while Zynga only main success is the series of Facebook games (Farmville, Cityville etc.). Could this had influenced the thinking behind PopCap to go with EA since they have a better track record and would offer a more stable structure? We may not know the full answer but personally I feel they went for the right choice and not just the highest bidder.
