EA buys PopCap Games

On July 13, 2011 by Ash Meehan

Today (July 12th) EA has confirmed the purchase of PopCap Games who are famous for some big titles like Planets vs Zombies and Bejeweled. The purchase cost EA in total $750 million.

The $750 million was split between parts of the purchase, $650 million was the acquisition price and $100 million worth of stock and multi year earn out.

EA CEO John Riccitiello had this to say on the purchase:

“PopCap’s great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA’s momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA’s global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels.”

PopCap’s CEO David Roberts also weighted in on the purchase by saying:

“We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games.”

“By working with EA, we’ll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience.”

It seemed from his first quote that other companies may have being interested in purchasing PopCap Games.

In all this may turn out to be a good move for EA as casual games are still doing quite well and not many of the big companies like Activision etc. take advantage of this area, it appears EA will be among one the biggest companies to take a swing at it.
