Some Playstation Network services returning this Week

On May 1, 2011 by Aaron Meehan

Well some good news for all you PS3 and PSP users. Sony have announced that some features of the Playstation Network will be coming back this week, here are the services that will be coming back online next week according to a press release from Sony Computer Entertainment(SCE):

  • Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
  • This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
  • Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
  • Access to account management and password reset
  • Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
  • PlayStation®Home
  • Friends List
  • Chat Functionality

In the press release SCE also mentioned the new security measures that they will be implementing to hopefully stop this from happening again:

  • Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
  • Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
  • Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
  • Implementation of additional firewalls

It is good to see the SCE mention what they are going and it goes without saying these new security measures will be welcome and hopefully leave the PSN users feeling a bit better.

Also the SCE will be rolling out a “Welcome Back” program for the Playstation Network and  Qriocity. This is basically the SCE’s way of saying sorry for the downtime and here is some stuff that hopefully makes up for some lost credibility. Here is what the Sony Computer Entertainment will be offering with their “welcome back” program:

  • Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
  • All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
  • Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

In all it is pretty sweet way to say sorry, as people get to see what the Playstation Plus is like for 30 days and hopefully the free downloads that will be offered wont turn out to be mediocre.
