Yesterday Andrew McLeod one of the Game Designers on Guild Wars 2  talk about the crafting in the games.

Andrew explained that there would be 8 crafting disciplines:

  • Weaponsmith – For crafting melee weapons.
  • Huntsman – For crafting ranged weapons.
  • Artificer – For crafting magical weapons.
  • Armoursmith – For crafting heavy armour pieces.
  • Leatherworker – For crafting medium armour pieces.
  • Tailor – For crafting light armour pieces.
  • Jewelcrafter – For crafting jewelry.
  • Cook – For preparing food that can give temporary combat buffs.

You can have a maximum of 2 crafting disciplines but you can change your discipline by visiting the master craftsmen NPC which are in all major cities. If you choose to change back to your previous discipline you will be able to retain your skill level and recipes, but the price of the change will depend on the skill level in that discipline.

Along with the 8 crafting disciplines there are 3 gathering disciplines which are:

  • Salvaging kits – Salvaging kits allow you to salvage crafting materials out of old or unwanted items.
  • Looting – Gives you a chance of finding appropriate crafting material like leather and trophies when you loot your enemies.
  • Harvesting – Allows you to harvest ore veins, plants and trees for materials.

Crafting the items are done at crafting stations located in cities and major outposts for example using an anvil to make a sword etc. Andrew said they decided to go with a discovery system for learning recipes so that crafters could distinguish themselves.

The max level for each discipline will be 400 skill points.
