World of Warcraft: level boost price revealed

On February 19, 2014 by Ash Meehan

How much are you willing to pay to level your World of Warcraft character? Well according to MMO-Champion you could be paying up to $60 to go from level 1 – 90 when Warlords of Draenor, World of Warcraft’s upcoming expansion, is released.

The character upgrade is not a new announcement the upgrade was originally revealed at Blizzcon, and it does appears on the expansion feature list: A level 90 character upgrade – play immediately! However the ability to pay real money to level your character was only confirmed last month via a blog post on the official World of Warcraft website: “We’ve been evaluating ways to make that possible without having players go through roundabout methods (such as purchasing multiple boxes and performing multiple character transfers), and in the near future we’ll be testing out a feature that gives you the option to purchase a character upgrade directly”.

There is no word if players will receive any level appropriate gear with the character boost, but one can assume that will likely be the case. At $60, which is the price of a new game and likely more expensive than the upcoming expansion I don’t like this move. If World of Warcraft was a free to play game I would be somewhat lenient, I think $60 is way too high, but World of Warcraft is a monthly subscription based mmo.

Over the years Blizzard have been adding real money items into World of Warcraft via the Battle.net shop. At present players can buy pets for €10, helmets for €12 and mounts for €20. Players can also pay real money for name change, appearance changes, race changes, character transfers and faction changes, the prices for these options range from €8 to €25.

With Blizzard stating that they have no plans to go free to play, the question is how far is Blizzard willing to go on the real money store? Could we see experience boosts or more pets/mounts in the future? Only time and how well the character boost option goes will answer this question.
