World of Warcraft subs drops a further 800,000

On August 5, 2014 by Aaron Meehan

During the Activision-Blizzard Q2 2014 earnings call, Blizzard revealed that their monolithic MMO World of Warcraft has lost more subscribers with the sub numbers dropping from 7.6 million to 6.8 million, this is the lowest figure since 2006.

While a drop of 800,000 is not a good sign the drop in subscriptions makes sense as the game has not received a major content update for several months, the last major update 5.4 was released in September 2013.

World of Warcraft’s subscription figures will likely rise once again when the MMO’s upcoming expansion Warlords of Draenor is likely to be released later this year. For example when latest WoW expansion, Mists of Pandaria was released subscription numbers rose by 900,000.
