Nintendo has announced that their newly released Wii U title, Mario Kart 8 is now their fastest ever selling Wii U title with worldwide sales figures reaching over 1.2 million as of June 1st.

The figure, which was announced via an email from Nintendo PR means that about 20% of existing Wii U owners bought the game. The 20% figure comes from the fact that as of March 31st, Nintendo had sold 6.17 million Wii U systems. Of course, the number of Wii U systems has likely gone up since then and some people who bought Mario Kart 8 might have bought it as part of Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle.

The sales numbers for Mario Kart 8 also means that Nintendo has sold just over 100 million Mario Kart titles. To date the best selling Mario Kart title is Mario Kart Wii for the Wii, which according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures is 35.53 million as of March 31, 2014.
