Sony: Over 7 million PS4s sold worldwide

On April 17, 2014 by Ash Meehan

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has today revealed that they have sold more than 7 million PlayStation 4s globally as of April 6, 2014.

The last sales figures, which were released in January, stated that the SCE had sold 4.2 million units by December 28th.

“The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. via an emailed press release “The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months.”

SCE also revealed PS4 software sales are also going strong with more than 20.5 million copies sold in retail stores worldwide and through the PlayStation Store as of April 13, 2014.

SCE also announced a new video editing tool for the PlayStation 4 called SHAREfactory. The new piece of software will be released with the 1.70 PS4 update.

For those who wish to create and share edited videos via the PS4 this is a great announcement, especially for those who don’t have access to a HD PVR, which people will be able to legally use after the 1.70 update. When the PS4 was released the ability to record footage via a HD PVR was possible with any workarounds due to the PS4’s High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP).
