Bungie, the creators of Halo has officially revealed their not so secret new shooter, Destiny. Destiny takes place in the distant future where you and other players, take on the role of Guardians of the last city on Earth.

According to Bungie, Destiny will be a persistent, online universe not unlike a mmo, but Bungie have said that Destiny is a shared world shooter rather than a mmo.

Destiny’s story takes several years in the future after the fall of the golden age. After getting saved by the Traveller, humanity has begun to return to the Golden Age and returned to the stars and their lost worlds. But everything isn’t perfect as various races such as the Vex want to wipe humanity out for good.

Bungie has given a brief overview of the game:

In Destiny you are a Guardian of the last city on Earth, able to wield incredible power. Explore the ancient ruins of our solar system, from the red dunes of Mars to the lush jungles of Venus. Defeat Earth’s enemies. Discover all that we have lost. Become legend.

Some of the key features in Destiny include:

  • Brave New World – Destiny will instantly draw players into a universe of heroes and legends, with worlds and storytelling crafted by Bungie, the creators of Halo – one of the most beloved and critically-acclaimed entertainment franchises of all time.
  • Your Legend – In Destiny you create your own legend as you and your friends venture out into the solar system to reclaim the treasures and secrets lost after the collapse of humanity’s Golden Age. Over the course of your adventures you become more powerful, able to wield rare and exotic weapons, gear, and powers.
  • Adventure Awaits – Personalize and upgrade every aspect of how you look and fight with a near limitless combination of armor, weapons, and visual customizations. Take it all with you into every mode, including Destiny’s story, competitive multiplayer, and public combat destinations. Return to The City, Destiny’s third person social space to refuel, repair, and rearm before going out on your next adventure.
  • Connected Universe – Destiny is more than a disc in a drive, it is a persistent, online universe filled with other players. As the world grows and expands over time, so does the story, the destinations you can access, the activities you experience, and rewards you can earn.

Bungie also announced that Destiny will be available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as future consoles (this is likely the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles).

In a press release about Destiny, Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, had the following to say about Destiny.

“Destiny is a world that evolves. It is a world with wide boundaries that allows you to roam and explore. It is a world where, even in story mode, you could encounter other players on their own adventures. And of course, it is a world that brings all of this together with the visceral, heart pounding immediacy of an expertly crafted first-person action title. We are very excited to bring this ambitious, innovative and creative game to players around the world.”
