Everquest inducted into GDC Online Hall of Fame

Sony Online Entertainment’s 10 year+ old MMO Everquest has been inducted into the GDC Online Hall of Fame for its advancements in online play.

Everquest joins Ultima Online as the second game to be inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Everquest is being recognized because of its long-term advancement of online gaming, pioneering major shifts in the medium’s development and video game as a whole. It is also credited with the introduction the concepts of guilds and raiding within an online world and is cited as an inspiration for nearly every subsequent MMORPG.

Everquest has won awards such as 2006 Walk of Game selection and 2008 Technology & Engineering Emmy Award.

John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment said “We are incredibly proud of its impact on the industry and the community we have built. Tonight’s honor is a testament to the hard working individuals who have contributed to EverQuest – both past and present.”

Everquest to date has 17 released expansions and will release its 18th expansion arriving later this year called Veil of Alaris.

  • I am not surprised. I loved that game back in the day. I nearly bought Ultima Online back in 98 after getting bored with Meridian 59. But a random bloke said to me in GAME, buy Everquest, it’s a lot better. I never regretted the purchase :)

    Just a shame the population dropped when SWG came out.
