Star Trek Online to boldly enter free to play space

On September 1, 2011 by Ash Meehan

Last week during the Perfect World’s Q2 2011 results earnings call Q&A session, Kelvin Lau CFO of the company said that a free to play model is in the works for Star Trek Online.

Cryptic Studios the developers of STO were bought by Perfect World back in late May from Atari for approximately €35 million.

In the Q&A session Kelvin did say that “And also Star Trek Online, after the acquisition, in fact Cryptic is working on the free to play model for Star Trek Online”.
STO is expected to implement the free to play model by the end of the year and it is believed that the free to play model should work well in the US.

Pay to play MMOs recently have opted to take on a hybrid free to play model which has seen success for example Turbine’s “The Lord of the Rings: Online” which made increased profits compared to when it was pay to play.

Free to play seems to becoming the norm and it makes sense, since there are more and more MMOs coming out on the market it is becoming over saturated and people are not willing to pay out $15 a month on more than one MMO and so offering a hybrid free to play model is a great way of getting more people interested.
