Red Faction: Armageddon review

Red Faction: Armageddon, Appetite for destruction.

I was lucky enough to attend a press event hosted by THQ and developed by Volition in London on the 26th May 2011, full hands on gameplay. (This is also linked to the SyFY channel, an interesting twist). Reviewed platform Xbox 360, also available on PS3 and PC.

Game Premise

Red Faction Armageddon is the fourth instalment in the series, set half a century, after Red Faction Resistance. The resistant’s of mars a forced into hardship when a terraformer device is destroyed, causing the atmosphere to become toxic and forcing the human population underground, using the old mining tunnels to create a new underground society.

Ten years after this event. The grandson of Alec Mason (hero of the Martian Revolution Heroes), Darius Mason. Finds himself running a business in an underground city called Bastion. He operates by mining, scavenging, mercenary work and on occasions venturing onto the Martian surface for profit.

Darius is asked to open an old Marauder mine shaft in a temple. This is when all hell is set loose and sets up the game plot.

The game talks place in third person mode.


Before I start, I have to point out that I have never used a console in my life. I am a PC gamer full stop (contact me if you want to know why). I was aware that the demo was on the XBOX 360 and is available for PC and the PS3. So my review may come across bias from a PC gamer’s point of view.

Also I needed help from David Abzug (Game Designer) and Jameson Durall (Design Director) to understand how to use a controller. Yes I was embarrassed. It took me an hour or two to get up to speed on playing the game. Added to which the other reporters were half may age and could use controllers without even thinking about it. Not to mention the first thing on my mind was to ask David Abzug where the toilet was!

So once I settled in, this is what I thought…..
